Mkomazi National Park

Overview

Nestled in the northeastern part of Tanzania, Mkomazi National Park is one of the country’s lesser-known yet most rewarding safari destinations. Bordering Kenya’s Tsavo National Park, Mkomazi forms a crucial part of the larger Tsavo-Mkomazi ecosystem, offering a unique blend of wildlife conservation, rugged landscapes, and cultural heritage.

🐘 Famous For
  • Black Rhino Sanctuary: Mkomazi is home to a rhino sanctuary where visitors have a rare chance to see the endangered black rhinoceros.

  • African Wild Dogs: One of the few parks in Tanzania where these elusive predators are being reintroduced.

  • Birdlife: With over 450 bird species, it’s a birdwatcher’s paradise—especially for spotting dry-country species.

  • Stunning Views of Mount Kilimanjaro: On clear days, the snow-capped peak of Africa’s tallest mountain can be seen in the distance.

  • Cultural Interactions: Opportunity to learn about the lifestyle and traditions of the Pare and Sambaa people nearby.

🌿 Mkomazi National Park – Tanzania’s Untouched Wilderness

Mkomazi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most strikingly beautiful and least-visited parks. Located in the northeastern part of the country, near the town of Same, the park shares an ecosystem with Kenya’s renowned Tsavo National Park, creating a vital transboundary wildlife corridor. Spanning over 3,200 square kilometers, Mkomazi is a sanctuary of dry open savannah, rolling hills, and acacia woodlands, offering a different safari experience from Tanzania’s more famous parks.

🐾 What Makes Mkomazi Special

Mkomazi is a stronghold for rare and endangered species. It is home to one of Tanzania’s few black rhino sanctuaries, giving visitors the chance to see these critically endangered animals in a secure and natural habitat. The park is also one of the only places in the country where African wild dogs are actively protected and bred.

Its proximity to the Pare and Usambara Mountains creates a dramatic backdrop for game drives and photography, while the occasional view of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance adds a magical touch to the experience.
